Abstract

The aim of this research project was to assess the feasibility of utilizing Perplexity AI as a pre-writing tool to enhance the writing abilities of 600 participants from Asian colleges. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative analyses to evaluate the impact of integrating Perplexity AI into the pre-writing process, acknowledging the growing significance of artificial intelligence in academic contexts. Quantitative results, presented in Table 1, demonstrate a notable improvement in various writing performance metrics after the integration of Perplexity AI. Coherence, organization, vocabulary usage, and grammar all showed statistically significant increases, with mean improvements ranging from 0.7 to 0.8. These findings align with qualitative insights gathered through interviews and focus group discussions, where participants expressed heightened awareness of structural elements in their writing and increased confidence in expressing ideas coherently and organizing them effectively. Table 2 illustrates a significant positive shift in participants' self-perceived writing skills, confidence, and attitudes towards writing after the intervention with Perplexity AI. Mean values increased by 1.3 to 1.5, suggesting not only improvements in writing but also a more positive perception of their own abilities. Qualitative data revealed that students appreciated the personalized feedback and suggestions provided by Perplexity AI, contributing to increased confidence in their writing abilities. Thematic analysis of qualitative data (Table 3) identified key themes, with a substantial proportion (80%) expressing appreciation for Perplexity AI. Themes of improved structural awareness, enhanced confidence, and a positive attitude align with quantitative findings, providing a holistic view of the positive impact of Perplexity AI on students' writing experiences. The mixed-methods approach employed in this study supports the effectiveness of Perplexity AI as a pre-writing tool in enhancing the writing skills of Asian college students. The findings contribute valuable insights to discussions on the integration of artificial intelligence technologies in academic settings, suggesting the potential for improved writing skills through the incorporation of such technologies.
